The Adirondack Gardener?
Who he is, who he isn't and why he never answers his phone.

Adirondack Gardener is the screen name Wayne uses on a few gardening newsgroups that he participates in. You can almost always find him hanging around the forums at Organic Gardening. Stop by and join in the discussions. But since he's constantly being asked for background info (ok, one person asked to see a photo,) here's a little bit about "The Adirondack Gardener."

Surprising to everyone, and no more than to himself, Wayne moved from his beloved Adirondacks to the hills of western Maine to take a supervisory engineering job with a modular home manufacturer. Unaccustomed to working an 8 hour day, he put gardening and chicken rearing aside for a year while settling in to his new environs. Now ensconced in an old house on a bit of land, both the new garden and new flock are finally getting off the ground.

Before moving to Maine, he was usually found tending his garden on the main street of Bloomingdale or sittling idly around watching the chickens patrol the yard. He spent the previous seven years doing freelance home design and drafting for builders and modular home manufacturers in addition to web design and database programming. He has also operated an online used book business since 1998 (now on hiatus,) a book review website and a number of sites about activities in the Adirondacks.

In the 1970s and 1980s, he operated a small market garden in southern NY, near the corner of NJ, PA and NY, where he raised many tons of plum tomatoes for the PYO crowd while also working for the Postal Service. A series of life changes led him away from gardening and the Post Office, into computers and architecture, and ultimately to the mountains, where he became re-acquainted with the Biointensive gardening methods as synthesized by Alan Chadwick and John Jeavons.

Given the daily opportunities for hiking, fishing, canoeing and bicycling, The Adirondack Gardener finds it difficult to keep regular office hours. Please bear with him; life in Paradise isn't easy. When attempting to contact him by phone or email, please be patient. He almost always manages to answer a message before losing it.

The Adirondack Gardener has two daughters and one grandchild living in the Capital District area of NY and another grandchild on the way. Though he understandably misses his life in the Northern Adirondack Mountains of New York, he is content to be settled in Maine where he enjoys writing about himself in the third person.
